When homeowners think about replacement windows, they usually think about cost and efficiency. But the window style matters just as much: it shapes how a room ventilates, how easy the glass is to clean, how much you see, and even how well the unit seals. Here is a plain-English tour of the most common styles.
Double-hung
The classic. Both the top and bottom sashes operate, and they tilt in for easy cleaning from inside — a big plus on upper floors. Double-hungs suit almost any home and are the most popular replacement style for good reason.
Casement
Hinged on the side and cranked open like a door, casements swing fully outward. That makes them excellent for ventilation and, when closed, they press tightly against the frame for one of the best air seals of any operable style — great for catching a breeze over a kitchen sink.
Slider
Sashes glide horizontally past one another. Simple, durable (no cranks or springs), and a natural fit for wide openings where a horizontal proportion looks right.
Picture & specialty
Picture windows are fixed — they do not open — so they offer the largest unobstructed view and the tightest seal of all. Pair them with operable units on either side for the best of both. Specialty shapes (arched, geometric) add architectural character.
Bay & bow
These project outward from the wall, combining several windows into one feature that adds light, a sense of space, and often a seat or shelf. They make a dramatic difference in a living room or breakfast nook.
There is rarely one right style for a whole house. The best results usually mix styles by room — casements where you want airflow, picture windows where you want the view, double-hungs everywhere else.
How to choose
- Ventilation matters most → casement or double-hung
- Cleaning upper floors from inside → double-hung with tilt-in sashes
- Maximum view, no operation needed → picture window
- Wide opening, simple operation → slider
