ENERGY STAR is a joint program of the EPA and the Department of Energy. For windows, it sets performance thresholds — primarily on U-Factor and Solar Heat Gain Coefficient — that a product must independently meet to earn the label. It is third-party verified, not self-declared.
Why it is climate-specific
A window that is efficient in Arizona is not necessarily efficient in Illinois. ENERGY STAR divides the country into climate zones, and Illinois sits in the Northern zone, where keeping heat in is the priority. A qualifying window here has a low U-Factor tuned for cold winters.
When you compare windows, make sure they are ENERGY STAR certified for the Northern climate zone — not just "ENERGY STAR" generally. The zone is what makes the rating relevant to your heating bill.
How it shows up on your bill
Certified windows reduce the heat that escapes in winter and enters in summer, which lowers the load on your furnace and air conditioner. The savings are real and ongoing, though the exact amount depends on your home, your old windows, and your usage.
